Read the email verification report

Read the results of checked addresses, measure risk with a bounce test and clean your list before you send.

Reports > Email verification helps you find invalid addresses before you send and protect your sender reputation. An email sent to an address that does not exist bounces. As your bounce rate rises, your emails find it harder to reach the inbox. On this tab you measure the risk for free, clean a list when needed and see which addresses were held back at send time.

The numbers at the top

The date range in the top right of the page sets the numbers at the top, the breakdown, the repaired counts and send-time protection. Bounce tests and cleaning history are not affected by it.

Addresses checked is the total for the period, with each address counted once by its latest result. Valid and Risky show their share of that total. Invalid · unknown gives both counts side by side. Blocked at send time counts addresses left out when a campaign went out.

Breakdown of checked addresses

ResultMeaningWhen you send
ValidSafe to send. The email goes out.
RiskyThe mailbox accepts everything or looks unreliable. The email goes out, but delivery is not guaranteed. Role addresses such as postmaster@ are skipped.
InvalidThe address does not exist.MailGraf does not send to it.
UnknownThe check could not determine the address's status. The email goes out.

Repaired at import

This card has two numbers. An address MailGraf can fix is repaired, imported and counted under addresses cleaned. For example, a cell containing mailto:[email protected] is saved as [email protected]. A row it cannot accept, such as olivia@example with no domain ending, never reaches your lists and is counted under bad rows rejected.

Send-time protection

When a campaign goes out, MailGraf checks the recipients one last time. It removes addresses known to be invalid and role addresses such as postmaster@. Nothing is sent to them, so they cannot bounce and are not added to your bounce rate.

The table shows the six campaigns that left out the most addresses in the period; the number at the top counts every campaign. Click a campaign name to open its report. The same address is counted again in every campaign. Addresses on your block list are not included, because they are never recipients in the first place.

You do not need to do anything about these addresses. A high count on one campaign means old or mistyped addresses have found their way into that list. Run a bounce test on new lists before you send to them.

Run a bounce test, then clean

  1. Click Run a bounce test

The button is in Bounce tests. Choose a list or All active contacts, then click Start bounce test. The test is free and does not use cleaning credits.
  2. Read the result

MailGraf counts addresses with a known result straight away. It then live-tests a random sample of up to 250 of the rest. New recipients / audience shows how many addresses were tested out of the whole list, and Estimated bounce shows the rate. Status shows Looks clean, Needs attention or Clean before sending.
  3. Clean the list if the rate is above 5%

In List cleaning history, click Clean a list. Choose the list and click Start cleaning. Cleaning uses credits and only checks addresses that do not have a result yet. If you have no credits left, the button reads Buy cleaning credits instead.
  4. Open the report

When the run finishes, click View report on its row. The report shows how many addresses were valid, invalid, risky or unknown, how many were added to the block list and the credits used.

After cleaning

Addresses found to be invalid are left out of future sends. To buy credits or read more about full verification, see Verify and clean your email list.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bounce test use cleaning credits?

No. A bounce test is free and does not use cleaning credits. Credits are used when you clean a list.

Why are addresses blocked at send time not in my bounce rate?

Nothing is sent to them, so they cannot bounce. MailGraf counts them separately and leaves them out of your bounce rate.

Why can't I test a list again?

If the last test showed Clean before sending, the list stays locked until you clean it. If a test on All active contacts showed it, no list can be tested until all active contacts are cleaned. Only one test runs at a time on your account, and there is a daily test limit; if you reach it, try again the next day. A list where every address already has a result shows Already checked.
